Storm Trooper's Day Off

This collection of fun photos depicts the adventures of two Storm Troopers in their time off. It's lighthearted and well shot. It'll put a little smile on your face.

Playing Card Ninja

If you've ever wanted to be a shuriken throwing ninja or perhaps Gambit of the X-Men, then this guy is an awesome inspiration. Rick Smith Jr can throw ordinary playing cards with such power and precision he can slice vegetables in half and put out candles from a few paces away. I think the cucumber is my favorite part. Its like one of those classic samurai cuts where the thing is left standing for a little bit after the hit.

This guy is similarly impressive with his business card throwing skills;

This is Not a Spiral

Pixels Invade New York

This fun little art film is kind of hard to describe. Essentially 8-bit creatures invade New York and go on a de-resing rampage. You'll just have to see it.

Social Johnny Cash Rotoscoping Video

This is an awesome website where you can use the onsite tool to rotoscope a single frame of "Ain't No Grave". The highest rated (by default, though you can pick other criteria) drawing in each slot gets dynamically included into the movie, slowly evolving into an awesome piece of art. Already it looks really cool, and I'm sure it will only get better!

*The* Action Film

Behold, I have witnessed the trailer to the action film. This is not just an action film, but the one that shall encompass them all. If this were a venn diagram, The Expendables would be the circle that engulfed every other film. "But why?" I hear you ask. Allow me to rattle off some of the cast:
-Sylvester Stallone
-Bruce Willis
-Jet Li
-Jason Statham
-Arnold "Get to the Choppah!" Schwarzenegger
-Mickey Rourke
-Stone Cold Steve Austin
-UFC Fighter Steve Couture

Now I'm not saying this movie will be "good" or that the acting will be decent, but if that isn't the makings of an action film, I don't know what is.

Rocket Launcher WTF?!

This is one of those wtf moments that's best left to the viewer. I just wonder, "Why the doll? WHY?!"

Oh, and this is from the "classic" film: Hard Ticket to Hawaii

Religion on Free Thinking

An extremist view, but sadly not uncommon.

YouTube's April Fools

YouTube's done an awesome thing. I'd say more, but it really should just be experienced. ASCII art ftw!

You can see their blog post about it here:

Nike Air's Secret

Did you know Nike has finally revealed its shoe secrets? It might astound you. (Or considering the date it might not...)

The Future of Music

Here's a cool way of visualizing music. Or is it a cool way of driving music with visuals?! Its the chicken and the egg thing, but with TRON lasers and future music.

If You Dream, The Terrorists Win

Aside from the fact this video is just over the top, take a moment to step back and appreciate how much can be conveyed by a good sound artist. In this day and age we focus so much on the visuals of movies and games, but don't forget about that sound technician who brought it all together. Those guys are fucking sweet!

... but us visual guys are still more important of course...

Galactic Empire State of Mind

Well if YouTube is to be used as a cultural thermometer (or perhaps barometer would be more appropriate?) then Jay-Z's song "Empire State of Mind" with well over 60 million views is something you've already seen. You know, the one where he awkwardly avoids making eye contact with the camera even when he's the only thing on screen?

Anyway, as with all big things it turns out they're better with Star Wars. Heck, this one even has an awesome title for it.

Ben Folds and Chat Roulette

So hopefully everyone here already knows what Chat Roulette is because you're all so internet savvy. Sadly its mostly filled with pervs and other such undesirables. However a man named Merton took a stand and did something totally sweet; he improved music to the people he encountered. Its hilarious in of itself (and immensely popular), but it gets better.

People were speculating who he was, and many people decided he was Ben Fold the famous musician. Well, he's not but Ben Fold loved the idea so much he ended up doing it live in concert! Whats better, he's good at it too!

Virigin's First Spacecraft Test Flight

Oh man, I've been following Virgin Galactic ever since they seriously started pursuing commercial space flight. Well they've certainly taken another massive step forward as they flew the combined mothership and spacecraft together in a test flight (though they remained connected for this one, no actual space flight). If nothing else you have to admit that the craft look damned sexy.

For those of you who don't know, the basic idea is to have the mothership fly the spacecraft up high into the air, where it then ignites and propels itself the rest of the way into space. With the entire setup being entirely reusable it should hopefully usher in a new era where you can buy tickets to space for a "reasonable" price!

Skeleton Jack Visits St. Patty's Day

Did you ever wonder what Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas would have thought of all those other holidays he missed out on? How about Saint Patrick's Day? Well look no further as Jack ponders the mystery of this booze soaked celebration.

Die Hardly Working

I'm constantly impressed at visual quality of the movies the guys at CH can put out. This action film isn't exactly highbrow stuff, but it's amusing to watch. My main complaint is that the ending is kind of weak, but the ride is worth it.

Caution: Sparta

I know this is a little joke is a little old now, but it made me laugh so I'll share it anyway. At least they're nice enough to give you fair warning.

Zombie Apocalypse Survival Flowchart

Sadly, the answer is overwhelmingly no, though you might get a sequel and some sweet zombie fights before you go down. There isn't much more you could wish for really.

Wario Shakes Youtube

Hot on the heels of my post of Frito-Lays' salsa commercial on Vimeo I bring the Warioland Shake It YouTube commercial. It was actually done before the salsa one, and took a different approach to it. I won't give anything away, but I'll point out that you should try playing around with all the bits afterwards. Its a pretty clever setup.

Home Taping is Killing Music

Home taping is killing music, just like the radio and the juke box before it. The music industry needs to start adapting instead of crying foul every time a new form of music distribution is invented.

More Proof Dolphins are Cooler than Humans

Now I'm no physicist but these dolphins appear to be defying the laws of bubbles go up and non-rigid spinning rings dislike staying together.

Oh wait, I am a physicist, and this shit still blows my mind! I'm sure there is some clever hydro vortex shit going on here thats keeping the bubbles in line, but the fact that these guys can just toss them off for fun (and then modify existing rings) is damn impressive. If that's not intelligence, I don't know what is.

Friday, March 12

And Then There Was Salsa...

Frito-Lays really went the extra mile with this advertisement. Hell, I didn't even notice it'd taken over my whole screen until my stunned brain recovered a short while after it was done. And to top it all off, now I really want salsa... >_<

Oh, and I'd embed it here but you need to see it at Vimeo for the full experience.

6 Most Statistically Full of Shit Professions

Have you ever considered going into sports writing, stock market trading or perhaps weather broadcaster? You probably already can. Each morning just flip some coins, and you're good to go! Hell, you might even do better than your leading competitors.

Shadow Artist Kumi Yamashita

This artist Yamashita has an amazing set of skills that I have no idea how you'd develop. And of course everyone knows those are the people the internet was made for. The whole "military communication network" was just a cover story. Anyway, I digress. She works mostly with shadows, but her pin/thread work and boot/ink stuff is equally amazing. Trust me, this woman's talents are preposterously awesome.

The video at the bottom helps explain what she does (and its a funny Japanese show too, yay!)

Stop Animation Drum and Bass

Check out this equal parts trippy and impressive stop animation music video. Its just moving colors in the form of blocks, but its mesmerizing. I'm still not clear how he did it considering some of the shots seem to contradict gravity. Perhaps he's only working on one side and the video is mirrored, or some other trickery. Thoughts?

Snowboard Basketball

Have you ever thought to yourself as you look at a snowboarding halfpipe, "Man, with that much air I could totally dunk a snowball into a basketball hoop!" No, of course you haven't. But these guys did, and now you wish you were as creative as them.

Awesome Rabbit Tank

Holy crap check out that awesome tank. Woah, wait... is it freaking crewed by rabbits?! Rabbits in trench coats? How do you counter a rabbit army equipped with walking tanks and flamethrowers?!

A wolf spy, hopefully. Well, at least the wolves have got to hope that guy can pull off some James Bond shit because that machine is intimidating... even with its cute little bunny ears on top.

Last Call: An Interactive Movie

Here's an interesting idea from German cinema. This movie Last Call allows you to volunteer your cellphone number at the start of the film. If you opt to participate you might get a call partway through where the protagonist desperately pleas for your help in major decisions. Depending what you say, the movie reacts accordingly.

Its a pretty cool idea, though I had to wonder what would happen if you didn't pick anything (I'd guess they have a default option?). Also, do we really want films that encourage you to keep your cellphone on?

The Academy Award Trailer

The trailer for every Academy Award winning movie ever. Its about a man, who discovers some things. Totally moves me man...

Ok Go Does It Again

Well Ok Go has once again made a brilliant and over the top music video. I can't even begin to imagine how much work and how many takes went into this project, but the results are certainly turning heads. Behold the impressive musical Rube Goldberg Machine. Also note that they never cut, meaning this whole thing ran smoothly in one go. If you've ever looked into these kinds of machines, that's a hell of a feat.

Shopping With Style

This kid has clearly mastered a lifetime skill. My way of shopping seems rather absurdly boring at this point. I mean, I don't even think I can do that crazy shuffle. So there's a new thing for the bucket list. Learn to moon walk like I'm simultaneously fighting a war against my sentient legs. Its gonna be sick.

Weird Science Award 2010

I have to admit that I had no idea MSNBC had a Weird Science Award, but its pretty hilarious. I don't want to give too much away, but lets just say science "went there".

Oh, and if you're intruiged here is the link to the 2009 and 2008 awards. Science never stops!

Burning Wood is a Conductor

If you were ever curious if carbon was a good conductor, I have the answer for you. Yes, and it's a sexy one at that. At least when that carbon is from a smoking branch lying across two power lines. Arcing electricity is hot shit.

Also it's worth noting that I don't believe that this branch fell from a tree. Kind of looks like blue skies all around to me...

Reflection Fail

Shiny things may be distracting and pretty, but they have a darker side you rarely hear about. They can spread lies about your choice in footwear. Dastardly!

This had been a PSA from The Humor Distillery

Mouse Trap

There isn't much to say on this one, just watch the pretty graphics and enjoy the producer's musical taste. I can assure you that its not as depressing as it initially seems. I laughed.

Minority Report is Here Today

Minority Report is here! Well, not the whole future reading police force bit, but the more important "wave your hands about" input model. I still can't really tell if this is actually a good way to interact with your machine for a lot of uses, but I'm sure we'll find out in the future. This presentation is pretty awesome, but it also has a lot of little cheats in it. Just because you have a cool glove doesn't mean you can instantly crop a dump truck out of a moving video and comp it in with some dude. Thats a piece of software that simply doesn't exist yet.

The Worst Movie Ever? Probably.

Wow, just wow. If the acting and story doesn't make you choke on your own puke, the hardcore theme song and visual effects will end you. I know this is supposed to be a parody but they almost did it too well... I do love the reviews section where they quote an IMDB review though. Nice touch.

Also is this an environmentalist movie in disguise? Like, hidden in a bush in a ghillie suit covered in mud kind of disguise...

THIS IS BIRDEMIC!!

I Think I'm Turning Japanese

Well here's a bizarre remake of a bizarre song, accompanied by a crazy video. I'm not sure why Kirsten Dunst did this production but its certainly amusing to watch. Of course if you took it seriously it could also be offensive, so you know... don't.

Warning: This is NSFW! There are brief flashes of cartoon breasts.

EDIT: Damn, it was too cool for school. Looks like it got taken down off YouTube. Feel free to search around but all the links I've added get taken down shortly there after. You're on your own.

360 Degree VR Action

Calling these stunning images "photographs" almost seems demeaning. They capture some breathtaking moments in a 360 degree panorama that also fully tilts on the vertical axis. Once you manage to close your jaw and wipe the drool off, now think about how they did this.

I mean seriously, how the f*** do you instantaneously capture an image in every direction with no seams, no timing issues (look at the water in the rafting picture), with no sign of a rig holding up the camera, no shadow from the camera, and frequently the camera is apparently floating over virgin snow, rushing water or 20' up.

'Shopped!

Sunday, February 21

T-Shirt War

This is an impressive little stop animation video where two fellows wage war upon each other using the graphics on their t-shirts. Its fun, cute and well executed. The fact most the sound effects are mouth sounds only makes it better.

The Helpdesk is Angry

Considering the shit they get, can you really blame them?

You Know You're a Nerd When...

You know you're a nerd when the first thing you notice about this photo is that scale on those AT-ATs is totally off. They should be towering above those trees and way wider than the street. Clearly 'shopped. You can tell by the pixels and myself having seen quite a few in my day.

Tilt-Shift Photography

Now here's a mind fuck for you. When I first was looking at these photos I thought, "sure, they're pretty good but its not that hard to see that they're actually little models." Oh how embarrassing when I discovered my "obvious" discovery was wrong. Indeed, these are actually real shots with a particular shifted lens and/or depth of field post effect that makes them look like models. Thats right, these are all from real life. Wikipedia it!

PS: Some of the videos at the bottom might help convince you.

Simplified Ratings

Hmmm, I was debating between switching my little rating system to a 5 star one or a simple thumbs up, thumbs down one, but then this lovely YouTube article sold me on the basic solution. Simply put, people don't use the middle stars anyway. If you like a video a lot, you put five stars, if its only decent you don't bother to rate, and if its total garbage you might put one star. So yeah, rate below what you think of my new change =P

It Eats Snow and Poops Bricks

Only the Japanese could come up with a cute robot to eat snow, poop ice blocks, and do it all in the name of helping the elderly. That being said, I totally want one. My snow forts would be the most epic in all the land, and no one would dare question of my army of loyal robot minions. Buahahahaha! The future is here!

Hitler's Battletech Game Goes Awry

This clip from "The Downfall" has been used is a ridiculous amount of parodies, but this particularly nerdy take on it is by far my favorite. The amount you'll laugh is most likely directly proportional to your exposure to gaming culture, so you could think of it as a nerd litmus test. In that regard, I win!

The Bat Bomb

I've seen many articles on the bizarre wonder weapons that Germany created during WWII, but this American project certainly takes the cake on the strangeness factor. Whats even more odd is apparently how well it worked! Well, animal cruelty issues aside... That part is a little disturbing. It is certainly creative though.

Batman vs. God

I'm sure everyone has had the argument of who would win in a fight, Batman or Superman? If you haven't, just try kicking that one into a conversation with some nerdy folk about. The sparks are beautiful :)

Of course in the end its a pointless comparison because Batman would win. Batman always wins. ALWAYS.

Oiligarchy

So this is outside my normal upload parameters, but I figured it was time we started seeing other media you know? Its not you, its me. I like interactive experiences... if you know what I mean.

Anyway, Oiligarchy is a game where you plumb the earths black gold to make your money, then bribe government officials into doing what you want. You also abuse the little people, invade Iraq, destroy Alaska, and raise the terror alert. Then when your oil economy comes crashing down as the reserves run out and and those damn "environmentalists" get up in your grill you're finally forced to turn to alternative energy. Hooray, fun games with a message!

... of course its worth noting that the alternative energy source in this game may involve liquefying people...

Wow, I never thought of our Mars exploration like this. Now I feel guilty for all those excited moments I had learning about its discoveries...

Dubai Deals with Financial Crisis

The Onion covers Dubai's cancellation of their much anticipated 11 mile indoor mountain range.
"This is a very sad day for the emirate of Dubai," Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum told reporters at a press conference held inside the gold-plated anti-gravity chamber in his palace. "Although I believe it is the basic right of all who visit us to be able to scale to the top of a 15,000-foot-tall manmade snowcap, these tough economic times have made it an impossibility. Never before has our proud municipality faced such a grave crisis."

Never before (and probably never again) have I been simultaneously so impressed and confused by a naked man. The fact that these shots were taken in 1988 makes it only that much more impressive. I'd guess there is was no digital enhancement run on these things... wow. Amazing time lapse.

"Smack my Bitch Up" Remade

Here's some proof that remixed electronic music is stupidly simple and takes little time or artistic talent to create. Oh wait...
